CAN YOU UNDERSTAND THIS MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE?

The magic in this piece of glass
So place it in the window
Let the unseen magic
This message, fairly simple, saysYou know when times are rough,The miracle within this glass
Know that I am always with you, in both good times and bad…
SAY OR TELL??

Say and tell have similar meanings. They both mean to communicate verbally with someone. But we often use them differently.
The simple way to think of say and tell is:
You say something
You tell someone something
You say something
You tell someone something
Ram said that he was tired.
Ram told Jane that he was tired.
Anthony says you have a new job.
Anthony tells me you have a new job.
Tara said: "I love you."
Tara told John that she loved him.
But, of course, it is not always so easy. Here are a few rules to help you.
Personal objectWe usually follow tell with a personal object (the person that we are speaking to). We usually use say without a personal object:
She told me that she loved John.
She said that she loved John.
He told everybody that he had to leave.
He said that he had to leave.
Say "to someone"With say, we sometimes use "to someone":
He said to me that he was tired.
Tara said to Ram that he had done very well.
Anthony said to her, "I hope you come soon."
"I'd like to sleep," she said to him quietly.
Direct speechWe can use say with direct speech. We use tell only with direct speech that is an instruction or information:
Amanda said, "Hello John. How are you?"
"That's great'" she said.
He told her: "Open the door quietly."
She told me, "I have never been to England."
We can use say with direct questions, but we cannot use tell:
She said: "Do you love me?"
The policeman said to the prisoner, "Where were you at 8pm?"
Reported speechWe can use say and tell to talk about reported information:
She said that it was raining.
She told me that she would call at 2pm.
We cannot use say or tell to talk about reported questions. We must use ask (or a similar verb):
She asked if I had ever been there.
They asked what I wanted to eat.
She asked where he lived.
He asked if she wanted to go home.
Orders, adviceWe use tell + object + infinitive for orders or advice:
She told him to sit down.
They told me not to wait.
Tell Neil to have a holiday and forget her.
PhrasesHere are a few fixed phrases with tell. We cannot use say with these phrases:
tell (someone) a story
tell (someone) a lie
tell (someone) the truth
tell the future (= to know what the future will bring)
tell the time (= know how to read a clock)
what, what whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat??

There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody's job. Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

ARE YOU A CAT FAN?

Almost all cats use some form of vocal communication, but some do more often and more intensively. Certain cat breeds are more talkative than other. Siamese cats are well known for being the vocalists of the cat world, while Persians tend to be quieter.
The most famous feline sound is the meow, which has many versions of different lengths, pitches and pace. Other familiar cat sounds are the aggressive hisses and growls, the howls of females in heat, the chirp and chatter of hunting cats and the famous purr.
The Meows
The Purina Encyclopedia of Cat Care notes that meows are directed almost exclusively at humans. In the cat-to-cat context these sounds are made most often between mother and kitten and not between adult cats.
The pitch of the meow can help you understand its meaning. The lower the sound, the more agitated the cat is - good examples are often heard in veterinary clinics! If the sound is high toned, than the cat is probably quite happy to convey his message. A welcome meow is usually quite high pitched.
With time, most owners learn to tell the different "cat words" that their feline friend says. Repeated messages such as "I'm hungry" "pet me" and "open this can", can become very identifiable
STUDY PHILOSOPHY AND BE SMARTER AND HAPPIER

Among the liberal arts majors, philosophy is one of the strongest. As a group, philosophy majors score on the GRE, LSAT, and GMAT in the highest percentiles. So besides preparing students for the graduate study that might lead to a career in philosophy, the study of philosophy helps prepare students for careers in such fields as law, medicine, government, business, journalism, publishing, teaching, and the ministry.
This may be enough to show that it can be a good idea to study philosophy, but it only hints at what the study of philosophy can really do for those who take it up. The study of philosophy broadens one’s intellectual horizons and it helps one develop a sense of one’s intellectual roots. In the process, it does a great deal to make one’s thinking genuinely freer and less servile. The authors of the American Philosophical Association’s 1992 publication on “The Philosophy Major” have put it this way:
The study of philosophy serves to develop intellectual abilities important for life as a whole, beyond the knowledge and skills required for any particular profession. Properly pursued, it enhances analytical, critical and interpretive capacities that are applicable to any subject-matter, and in any human context. It cultivates the capacities and appetite for self-expression and reflection, for exchange and debate of ideas, for life-long learning, and for dealing with problems for which there are no easy answers. It also helps to prepare one for the tasks of citizenship. Participation in political and community affairs today is all too often insufficiently informed, manipulable and vulnerable to demagoguery. A good philosophical education enhances the capacity to participate responsibly and intelligently in public life.
In short, the study of philosophy increases one’s intellectual powers, and as a result it improves one’s chances of staying afloat in the high and often choppy seas of human action and human thought. Philosophy is a superb undergraduate major. Far more people ought to consider it seriously.

HISTORY OF WITCHCRAFT

In general witchcraft is sorcery, the magical manipulation of the supernormal forces through the use of spells, and the conjuring or invoking of spirits.
Anthropologists refer to witchcraft as the use of malevolent powers by psychic means without the need for ritual or charm. This is so for the days of the Inquisition but not for the contemporary western world where witches work magic through spells.
Witchcraft involves the use of supernormal powers such as shape-shifting, clairvoyance, invisibility, flying, the ability to kill at a distance and astral projection.
During the middle ages and the renaissance, it was defined as evil magic, heresy and devil-worship. Contemporary witchcraft has redefined it as a reconstructed form of Pagan religion that worships the Goddess and horned god and has no connection with Christianity or the devil. It also only used for good rather than for harmful use.
The inquisition was not a persecution of witches as believed by contemporary popular belief it was actually the persecution of heretics and enemies of the church.

WHO'S LADY GAGA ?
When Lady GaGa was a little girl, she would sing along on her mini plastic tape recorder to Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper hits and get twirled in the air in daddy’s arms to the sounds of the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. The precocious child would dance around the table at fancy Upper West Side restaurants using the breadsticks as a baton. And, she would innocently greet a new babysitter in nothing but her birthday suit. It’s no wonder that little girl from a good Italian New York family, turned into the exhibitionist, multi-talented singer-songwriter with a flair for theatrics that she is today: Lady GaGa.
“I was always an entertainer. I was a ham as a little girl and I’m a ham today,” says Lady GaGa, 22, who made a name for herself on the Lower East Side club scene with the infectious dance-pop party song “Beautiful Dirty Rich,” and wild, theatrical, and often tongue-in-cheek “shock art” performances where GaGa – who designs and makes many of her stage outfits -- would strip down to her hand-crafted hot pants and bikini top, light cans of hairspray on fire, and strike a pose as a disco ball lowered from the ceiling to the orchestral sounds of A Clockwork Orange.
“I always loved rock and pop and theater. When I discovered Queen and David Bowie is when it really came together for me and I realized I could do all three,” says GaGa, who nicked her name from Queen’s song “Radio Gaga” and who cites rock star girlfriends, Peggy Bundy, and Donatella Versace as her fashion icons. “I look at those artists as icons in art. It’s not just about the music. It’s about the performance, the attitude, the look; it’s everything. And, that is where I live as an artist and that is what I want to accomplish.”
That goal might seem lofty, but consider the artist: GaGa is the girl who at age 4 learned piano by ear. By age 13, she had written her first piano ballad. At 14, she played open mike nights at clubs such as New York’s the Bitter End by night and was teased for her quirky, eccentric style by her Convent of the Sacred Heart School (the Manhattan private school Nicky and Paris Hilton attended) classmates by day. At age 17, she became was one of 20 kids in the world to get early admission to Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. Signed by her 20th birthday and writing songs for other artists (such as the Pussycat Dolls, and has been asked to write for a series of Interscope artists) before her debut album was even released, Lady GaGa has earned the right to reach for the sky.
“My goal as an artist is to funnel a pop record to a world in a very interesting way,” says GaGa, who wrote all of her lyrics, all of her melodies, and played most of the synth work on her album, The Fame (Streamline/Interscope/KonLive). “I almost want to trick people into hanging with something that is really cool with a pop song. It’s almost like the spoonful of sugar and I’m the medicine.”

STAYING CONNECTED

Jess: I honestly don't count, but many, many times. Definitely more than twenty times a day. It's not really necessary.
Tom: I suppose I check once a day, and if I have any mail, it will be one or two weeks before I reply to it. I'm really bad at keeping in touch. I've got accounts at facebook and my space and hi5, all these social networking sites, but I almost never log on and people .... I got a message the other day, a friend telling me, I'm a boring facebooker. It's official because I haven't updated my profile in so long.
Jess: Why don't you? Is it that you haven't got enough time?
Tom: I have got so much free time. I think it's just because I'm very lazy. I take photos. I meet people. I do things. I just don't feel the need to tell everyone about it
Jess: Apart from e-mail, neither do I. I did join Facebook a couple of years ago when all of my friends did and everyone was sending me links to join, and I created my profile, but to be honest, it's too much for me to have more than one thing to check that many times a day, so usually I stick to e-mail for communication. Yes, I do check it a lot, but I think if I started checking Facebook as regularly, I wouldn't have time to do the things I need to every day.
TIRED
Hello Tom, I am very tired today, I think it’s because of my job.Really? I think you shouldn’t work so hard everyday, it’s not good for anyone.
I know Tom, but I have to work a lot because I have to pay my college.
I see. I have an idea. Why don’t you take some vitamins, they will make you feel better all day long.
Yes!!! I think it’s really a good idea. Thank you Tom.
You’re welcome Linda.
VIRTUAL WORLD
Tom: Jess, always when I see you, you’re sitting at the computer checking your e-mail. How many times a day do you check it?Jess: I honestly don’t count, but many, many times. Definitely more than twenty times a day. It’s not like I have millions of e-mails coming into my account every day, but I’m very impatient and I hate waiting for responses. How about you? Do you check your e-mail often?
Tom: I usually check once a day, but I don’t like to reply them. I’m really bad at keeping in touch. I’ve got accounts at facebook, my space, and Hi5, all these social networking sites, but I almost never log on. I haven’t updated my profile as well.
Jess: Why don’t you? Is it that you haven’t got enough time?

Jess: To be honest, it’s too much for me to have more than one thing to check that many times a day, so usually I stick to e-mail for communication. Yes, I check my e-mail a lot, but if I had more than one think to check I wouldn’t have time to do the things I need every day.

DO YOU UNDERSTAND SUSAN BOYLE?
An amazing discovery from Britain, Susan Boyle, a shy lady who came out of her shell to show that she is actually an amazing singer. At first, when she introduced herself, people didn't believe their eyes, thinking she was just another lunitic, they were all rolling their eyes up and down right and left and probably thinking she was going to make them laugh just like another one of them clowns, but she did prove them wrong!chicken recipe(receita de frango) video

friendship
Vocabularyspouse- husband or wife
bond- connection, something that makes two things stick together
twin spirit- someone very similar to you
stranger- someone you don't know at all
acquaintance- someone you don't know very well
right away- immediately
in common- things that you like or dislike are the same
Friendship is one mind in two bodies.
Your friend is the man who knows all about you, and still likes you.
A real friend is one who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.
Some friends come into our lives for just a short time. Others come and stay forever.
What turns a stranger or acquaintance into a friend? Do you know right away if you are going to like someone? Some people think that any stranger can become a friend if they spend enough time together. That may be true for some people. But one thing most of us agree on is that true friendships seem to happen when people have something in common. Perhaps we see a part of ourselves in our friends. Maybe seeing the good in them helps us to see the good in us as well.

catching a cold(pegando gripe)

Vocabulary
cure (n,v)- something that makes you well after being sick
literally (adv)- really, actually, exactly
virus (n)- very, very small --- that causes sickness
to get rid of (v)- to stop, to throw away
congestion (n)- stopped up (when your nose is congested you can't breathe)
miserable (adj)- very terrible feeling
fever (n)- heat in your head and body
remedy- (n) cure, something that makes you well
liquid (n)- wet and runny like water, milk
to get over (v)- to finish
Many people catch a cold in the springtime and/ or fall. It makes us wonder... if scientists can send a man to the moon, why can't they find a cure for the common cold. The answer is easy. There are literally hundreds of kinds cold viruses out there. You never know which one you will get, so there isn't a cure for each one.
When a virus attacks your body, your body works hard to get rid of it. Blood rushes to your nose and brings congestion with it. You feel terrible because you can't breathe well, but your body is actually "eating" the virus. Your temperature rises and you get a fever, but the heat of your body is killing the virus. You also have a runny nose to stop the virus from getting to your cells. You may feel miserable, but actually your wonderful body is doing everything it can to kill the cold.
Different people have different remedies for colds. In the United States and some other countries, for example, people might eat chicken soup to feel better. Some people take hot baths and drink warm liquids. Other people take medicines to stop the fever, congestion, and runny nose.
There is one interesting thing to note- some scientists say taking medicines when you have a cold is actually bad for you. The virus stays in you longer because your body doesn't have a way to fight it and kill it. Bodies can do an amazing job on their own. There is a joke, however, on taking medicine when you have a cold. It goes like this:
If takes about 1 week to get over a cold if you don't take medicine, but only 7 days to get over a cold if you take medicine.
